Sundays at The Bay: Modern Marimba

Sundays at The Bay is a free weekly music and performance program offered from 2:00 – 3:00 pm.  Bring a lawn chair to The Bay’s Civic Green on the north side of the Municipal Auditorium for concerts featuring local talent ranging from jazz and marimbas to guitar and gospel.   

Sunday, February 20: Modern Marimba

This dynamic collaboration of artists features marimba, vibraphone, and other mallet percussion keyboard music. 

The marimba is xylophone-like instrument originating in Africa, transported to Central America through the slave trade becoming an integral part of Indigenous cultures. The marimba has become a symbol of pride and resistance in Central America. Modern Marimba showcases the powerful expressions of ideas – with a primary purpose to amplify and reclaim diverse musical voices reflective of living, formerly living, and collective peoples from Maya to Florida’s prior inhabitants of Calusa, Tocobaga, Seminole, and Angolan maroons. 

 Join musicians from Modern Marimba in celebrating the marimba through many different styles of music. This extraordinary experience will exceed expectations as Modern Marimba enthralls, educates, and entertains.
